I have a customer who is running Oracle 8i on windows. This customer would like to save the whole oracle directory then remove the existing oracle directory. The customer would like to recover from the saved directory. Is this possible? I think this is possible as long as the database is stopped first. Am I right?

stopping the databse BEFORE backing it up ensures a good restoration, if not, the databse might not work at all when restored , a recovery might help solve the problem.
anyway, if the old backup is a cold one, the resotaration won't be a big proble, and notice that if you want to remove /overwrite the directory, the actual database must be shut (and services stopped if possible).
