May I know how can I inform the database users about the database shutdown at particular time.I have to shutdown the databse for the coldbackup as well as server maintainence.How can I inform the database users about non availability of the database.

It depends on your OS. In Windows you can use:

C:WINNTsystem32>net send
The syntax of this command is:

NET SEND {name | * | /DOMAIN[[:name]] | /USERS} message

On UNIX that will be "wall"
