Oracle 8.1.7 does not support command installation. My sun box does not have a monitor. How can I install it? Help me! Thanks.

Hi Jadie,

you can install via telneting from your pc if the box is reachable from network. You'veto set the $DISPLAY to <yourpc_ip>.0:0 than the installation screen will derived to your pc

as Uwe mentioned
you can 'bring' the GUI from unix box to your local PC
with
export $DISPLAY=hostname:0.0
just make sure u have an xhost(like exceed) running in ur pc.

Thank you very much, Mahesh and Uwe! I tried to install Oracle8 on Linux before through network. I didn't do it successful. So I need a little more details.

1. $DISPLAY=hostname:0.0 here hostname means the Sun box, not my PC, right?
2. What is XHOST? My pc is running Windows2000.

I really appreciate your response!

Regards
Jadie

hostname should be the your pcname or IP of your pc.
by this you are telling the unix to display the gui to the mentioned pc or anyther machine.
XHOST is (unix command )program that accepts and displays the images from other machine.
to accept and display unix gui , u need an windows based tool like HummingBird EXCEED . YOu dont need any exceed if you are viewing the gui in UNIX env.
xhost +serverName will do the job

Mahesh, thank you so much for your quick response.

My Sun box is on Internet, assigned an Internet IP. My PC is in an internal network, assigned an IP like 192.168.0.X. My PC is connected with the sun machine through a router and firewall. In this case, how to set the hostname or IP for DISPLAY? I have no idea! Please tell me how to do!

Thank you so much again!

Regards
Jadie

set your display to
192.168.0.X:0.0 and export it.
But without any terminal emulator like exceed you cannot bring the gui (installer) to your PC.
I beleive, you need a valid IP or dnsentry hostname. else
u cannot do this
